5 Tips for Conducting a Virtual Interview

Virtual interviews originally increased in popularity in order to slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, it is a trend that is likely to stick around now that both employers and candidates have experienced the benefits that it provides, namely, convenience. These seven tips will help you conduct seamless virtual interviews when hiring for open positions.

1. Preparation Time

Due to the convenience of not having to travel, it may be tempting to schedule a same-day interview. Refrain from this temptation. Give both yourself and your candidate time to adequately prepare. This ensures that the candidate is at his or her best come interview time and that you have all your ducks in a row too!

2. Send the Candidate a Virtual Invitation

It can be hard to keep track of when you scheduled each candidate for an interview. Send a virtual invitation by email. This allows you to better organize your interviews. Be sure to send all pertinent information such as time, day, format, length of the interview, and any usernames and passwords that the candidate will need to access the meeting room.

3. Test Your Equipment

Technology failure can be one of the biggest frustrations when it comes to holding virtual interviews. Make sure your internet connection is strong and that your camera and microphone are in working order.

4. Choose a Distraction-Free Location

Make sure that you choose a quiet place to conduct the interview. It should be free from both visual and audio distractions. Keep the environment professional by being mindful of the background if you are interviewing from your home. Neutral backgrounds are best for allowing the candidate to stay focused.

5. Proceed Like a Normal Interview

Apart from the fact that accommodations will need to be made since the candidate will not be sitting in the room with you, most aspects of a virtual interview will remain the same as an in-person situation. This includes:

  • Dressing professionally
  • Preparing questions for the candidate
  • Allowing the candidate to ask questions
  • Explain job expectations along with company culture and values
  • Discuss what the candidate can expect moving forward.
